Paediatric physiotherapy in Lugano-Paradiso

Children and teenagers: growing up moving well

From the first months of life to adolescence, physiotherapy helps children with head shape, scoliosis, motor development and recovery after an injury. We work through play and movement, always involving parents and working with the paediatrician and specialists.

What we treat

Below you will find the problems we see most often.

  • Plagiocephaly "Flat head" in babies, often linked to a preference for turning the head to one side.
  • Scoliosis Specific exercise and monitoring over time, in collaboration with the orthopaedic specialist.
  • Posture and motor development When a child seems clumsier, tires quickly or is late reaching movement milestones. We do not treat neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy: in those cases we tell you who to contact.
  • Injuries and fractures Recovering movement and strength after a fracture, a cast or a sprain.
  • Sports injuries Knee or heel pain in growing children who play sport, sprains, getting back on the pitch.
  • Back pain in young people Back pain in teenagers, to be assessed carefully and managed with movement.

How we work

  1. 01 Listening and assessment We listen to parents and child, observe how they move and rule out signs and symptoms that may need further investigation.
  2. 02 Play as therapy With the youngest children we work through play; with teenagers, with exercises close to their sport and interests.
  3. 03 Parents at the centre We show you what to do at home in everyday life: positions, games, simple exercises.
  4. 04 Teamwork We coordinate with the paediatrician, the orthopaedic specialist and, if needed, the coach.

Three myths to bust

People say "Scoliosis comes from bad posture or a heavy school bag" In reality The most common form, idiopathic scoliosis, is not caused by posture or school bags. It is not the fault of the child or the parents.
People say "To avoid a flat head, it's better to let the baby sleep on their tummy" In reality Babies must always sleep on their back. Tummy time is for when they are awake and supervised: that is when it helps head shape and development.
People say "If it hurts, they have to stop playing sport" In reality In most cases it is enough to adjust the load for a while, without training through pain. Sport remains an important part of growing up.

When to see the paediatrician straight away

Contact your paediatrician or the emergency department straight away if your child has:

  • pain that wakes them at night or does not ease with rest
  • fever with joint or back pain
  • a limp without an obvious injury
  • a swollen, warm and red joint
  • weight loss, unusual tiredness or loss of skills they had already acquired
  • a curve in the spine that changes quickly

Frequently asked questions from parents

Content by Sandra Rohr, physiotherapist · Updated October 2026

From what age can you see a child?

From the first months of life, for example for plagiocephaly, up to adolescence.

When should I worry about a flat head?

If you notice that your baby always turns their head to the same side or that one side of the head is flattening, talk to your paediatrician. The sooner the right positions and activities are introduced, the better.

Can physiotherapy correct scoliosis?

Specific exercise is part of scoliosis treatment, together with monitoring by the orthopaedic specialist and, when needed, a brace. Decisions are made together with the specialist, based on age and the size of the curve.

Can parents attend the session?

Yes, in fact we recommend it: that way you also learn what to do at home.

Is paediatric physiotherapy covered by insurance?

Yes. With a medical prescription it is covered by basic health insurance. All the details on costs and health insurance.
